@jimmyhobbit Of course the music came in first: they were playing along with previously recording tracks, which was how they recorded the song in the first place. Multi-tracking (which Les invented) was destructive in those days: every overdub destroyed the previous recording. If you messed up, there was no going back, you had to start from scratch. Even if this was just a lip-sync, the original proved they could do a helluva lot better than just fake it along with a pre-recorded track.

Nothing short of amazing on every level... I am never not in awe of this stuff & I'm sure that I'll be amazed by Lester's genius as long as I'm playing & living. Django's my favorite jazz/improv player but all around (skill, innovativeness, flavor, use of tone etc.) Les is my favorite guitar player. From the silky smooth to the gypsy-jazz inspired shredding it's just so much fun to hear & play. Just wish the 1st few bars of the solo weren't omitted for this spot. Thanks for posting this! :-)

In my opinion he was, is and ever will be the single greatest of his genre. There will never ever be another guitarist like him but his cool keeps us trying. Imitation is the very highest form of flattery and many want to imitate him. A tragedy. A loss of talent. A life lost still mourned to this day. May his memory, legacy and history reign on.
